ILC Wireless Network
The ILC
provides wireless laptop connection for all
classrooms, the courtyard, north and south staircases,
the Information Commons, and the Bookends Cafe (see
map below). The ILC wireless network is only
available to employees and students of the University
of Arizona. Access to the network means that you
agree to all of the
policies and procedures governing computer use at
the University.

PDA Users
Because of the
differences in Virtual Private Network (VPN) software
currently available for PDA's, we do not officially
support the use of PDA's on our network at this time.
As standard software emerges, we do expect to support
VPN for PDA's. In the meantime, feel free to
connect to the network using your VPN software (see
step 4). If you find a software package that is
successful, please let the staff of the Digital Media
Resource Center know so we can do further testing.
To connect to the ILC
wireless network, you must do four things:
1. Network card
compatibility check
Make sure that you are using a compatible laptop
wireless network card. To check your card's
compatibility
-
Go to the
WiFi Alliance
Certified Product
Listing
-
Select your
cards manufacturer
from the Filter
by Company
list.
-
Select
External Card
from the Filter
Products By
list
-
Select IEEE
802.11b from
the
Capabilities
list.
-
Click the
Submit button.
Your card should
appear in the list
of External Cards.
If your wireless network card does not
appear in the list, it does not necessarily mean that
it will not work on our network. However we can not
provide support for cards that are not WiFi certified.
2. Registration of your
network card
The ILC network requires that
you register the hardware address of your wireless
card. This is also known as the MAC address. If you
have successfully used your wireless card
elsewhere on campus, you can skip this step.
Please note, the internal
network card that connects to an Ethernet cable has a
different hardware address than the wireless card. If
you have only plugged your laptop in to the network,
and not used wireless, you still need to go through
this process.
To learn how to find the MAC
address of your computer go to
this helpful tip provided by CCIT.
Once you have located the MAC address, students can
go to
Student Link, click on Registration and
then click on DHCP Registration for campus network
access.
Faculty and staff should contact their departmental
network manager.
3. Downloading and installing the Virtual Private
Network (VPN) software.
In order to make sure that you are using a secure
and safe network, the ILC uses the University's
Virtual Private Network.
To obtain the necessary VPN software,
click here to go to the Site License website. (Mac
users, please note that VPN is only compatible with OS
X) Follow the directions for installing the software
for your computer's operating system.
For help installing VPN software, as well as
related technical assistance and problem reporting,
please contact CCIT Network Control at 621-7999, or
send a message to
nightfighters@arizona.edu.
4. Running the VPN software and connecting to the
network.
Once you have completed the three steps above, you
are ready to access the network. This is the
only step that must be done every time you wish
to connect to the ILC network. The other
steps only need to be done once.
When you are in the ILC, there are two wireless networks. The first, ILC-Disc is used in our discussion rooms and will be phased out at the end of the semester. The name of the network you want to connect to is UAWireless. This is also known as the network SSID. Once you have set up your laptop, it should automatically connect to the UAWireless network. If you have any problems connecting, please contact 621-help.
In order to "authenticate" yourself to the network
(let the network know you are a UA employee or
student), you must have a valid
UANetID. Your
UANetID is the first part of your email.arizona.edu or
u.arizona.edu address; everything in front of
the @. Your password is your e-mail password.
For PC users
If your wireless card is WiFi compliant, your
laptop will automatically connect to the ILC's
wireless network. You may then open the VPN
software from the START menu and connect to the
University of Arizona.
For Mac users
In the Apple menu, select Location and
select your Airport connection. Note: the Airport
connection must be set to receive an IP using DHCP.
Locate and run the VPN software.
Please Note: When you leave the Bookends Cafe and move in to the ILC, you will need to re-authenticate using your VPN software. The same is true when you move from the ILC to the Bookends.
