Teaching
in the ILC provides the opportunity for instructors to help
their students make connections and form relationships across
boundaries of classroom, discipline, skill, and background.
The facility is designed to foster active, sustained collaboration
between and among all members of the UA learning communitystudents,
instructors, and support specialistsin support of
undergraduate student learning.
There
are 14 classrooms in the ILC. Since the mission of the facility
is to provide a place on campus that is focused mainly on
the freshman experience, these classrooms have been designed
to fulfill the needs of the General Education program for
classrooms of various sizes that promote active learning
and personal connections. All classrooms are equipped with
an array of technology to facilitate and enable student-centered
teaching. The Media Center serves as the nerve center for
the creation, acquisition, storage, and delivery of information
related to classes taught in the ILC.
Both
the physical design of the building and the variety of support
staff housed in it bring a wealth of support to instructors
and students without their having to leave the building.
Instructors are encouraged to invite library, advising,
tutoring, and technical support staff to work in the classroom
alongside preceptors and students. They also have the opportunity
to consult with any of those specialists in designing and
preparing their classes or in finding ways to help new structures
to assist students receive outside of regular class hours.
Teaching
in the ILC entails several responsibilities on the part
of the instructor:
-
Instructors are asked to participate in an workshop before
they begin to teach in the ILC. The workshop is an introduction
to the ILC and its resources. It includes discussion of
pedagogy, hands-on experience with the technology that
will be available for use with their classes, and time
for development of instructional design and class material.
- Instructors
are be encouraged to spend several hours each week in
the Teaching Teams Office or the Information Commons,
where they will be available to students. These may be
regularly scheduled office hours for students in classes
taught in the ILC.
- After
they have taught in the ILC, instructors may be asked
to mentor faculty who are new to teaching in the building.
- Instructors
are be asked to facilitate evaluation of the effectiveness
of ILC technology and resources in the classes they teach.
Data from these evaluations may be used in making future
room assignments in the ILC and other technology-rich
classrooms on campus.
Instructors
who would like to teach in the ILC are asked to submit an
information form describing their course and their desire
to teach in this new environment. This information will
be used by the ILC Coordinating Team for scheduling and
the University Teaching Center to develop the workshop.
