The University of Arizona
Scenario 1: A Geology class

A Geology class is meeting in one of the Advanced Lecture Halls (150 seats). Class begins with a presentation on study skills for this class by someone from the University Learning Center. The instructor then uses the document camera to show rocks to the class on one side of the large screen. On the other is an outline reminding the students what to look for on the rock samples.

Alternating with the outline is a digital video of an Arizona Illustrated segment: "The Desert Speaks: Rock and Road Program." The video is controlled from the instructor's station. It is shown in small segments to weave the content into the lecture.

At any time during the semester, students use the Information Commons individually and in groups to review the digital video of both the Arizona Illustrated segment and the instructor's lecture. The video is indexed using Virage software so that students can easily find the specific part they need. Slides used during lectures have also been digitized and can be viewed at any time from Info Commons stations.

There are several undergraduate student preceptors in this class who regularly meet with small groups of students who need some extra help. One particular day, two small groups head off to the Info Commons right after class with the preceptors for some help learning how to use a piece of software. Another group heads to the Freshman Year Center for a tutorial on math skills they will need for their project. The instructor gets back to her office and realizes that she has forgotten to tell them something important about the assignment. She sends a message to one of the preceptors, which he receives via the wireless network in the Info Commons.

The instructor notices from her class roster that she has a large number of undeclared majors in this course. She takes a minute at the end of class every now and then to remind students that academic advising is readily available in the Freshman Year Center. This has paid off, as she observes a number of students dropping into the Advising Office on their way into or out of her class.
