Scenario 2: A History class

A history class is scheduled in one of the Kaleidoscope rooms, which is arranged for students to sit together in small groups.

On Monday, the instructor lectures and then holds a large group discussion based on the lecture and a short activity students have done in their groups.

On Wednesday the instructor gives the students an activity to complete from materials on the course web site. One student in each group has brought a laptop and logs into the WebCT site to retrieve the assignment and record the group's work.

On Friday the instructor has scheduled a librarian to begin working with students on how to find primary resources. She will cover how to use the SABIO catalog and the web for this purpose as well as how to use online finding aids at other libraries to identify resources. She will be an ongoing resource for students and is scheduled to come into class several times throughout the semester.

The following Monday the students are assigned to meet in the Info Commons in their small groups to begin their search for primary materials. As the students identify sources on SABIO they go directly to the Library stacks and retrieve materials. They receive a mini-lesson from an Info Commons staff member on how to scan these materials and create .pdf files for the web sites they are creating.

On days when students meet in small groups outside the classroom, the instructor stations himself in the Teaching Teams Office in the ILC to be available for those students who need some extra help. Because students make routine postings of their work to the online discussion of WebCT, it is apparent that several of them need assistance with their writing skills. The instructor is able to take them directly to the tutoring office in the ILC and introduce them to staff there to break the ice.
